Our garden party started with a bang! Culinary students made Whole Wheat Pumpkin Spice Muffins for the volunteers and many other people brought food and drinks to share. Active 2030 club brought out their members, my students were there and some even brought their parents! Saturday we put together the wine barrels, washed, primed, and painted the re-purposed corrugated tin roofing from Petaluma Heritage Salvage. We also attempted to dig all of the holes for posts and had to go out for more help to accomplish the task. Many of the students and Erica, my garden angel, stayed until 4pm to help finish the task of painting.
On Sunday, Francisco Vazquez, master builder, came at 7am with another worker and finished putting up all of the posts and building the structure for the garden, an amazing task!!! I got there at 10am and started to move the HUGE pile of amended soil into the boxes alone. That is when I started to call my students for help. Many of them had other commitments but Tessa came right over and then the most amazing thing happened. I saw two people walking toward the garden with a shovel and water bottles. The Martineks came to the rescue and helped with the shoveling. I also talked with a neighbor who happened to be walking by with his dog and he too came to our aide. Around 11am Tony, Leo, and Juan showed up. They had walked all the way from Safeway in the heat to help us for the day. We worked hard and finished by 1pm.
Thank you all for your help!!! Feel free to leave a comment.
